When the Rain Stops Falling

by Andrew Bovell

-A synopsis from the Director:

It’s raining. Gabriel York is awaiting the arrival of his grown son whom he hasn’t seen since he was seven. “I know what he wants. He wants what all young men want from their fathers. He wants to know who he is. Where he comes from. Where he belongs. And for the life of me I don’t know what to tell him.” That’s the beginning of this compelling family saga that takes us back and forth in time from one generation to another, from 1959 to 2039, from London to Australia. With four generations of fathers and sons, their mothers, lovers and wives, the play is epic in its scope, yet at the same time extraordinarily intimate.

-For this production of When the Rain Stops Falling, Jillian and I really wanted the music and transitional sounds to derive from the elemental aspects of the play. The music at times needed to have the qualities of falling rain which I found success in creating by layering quick pizzicato notes with heavy reverb tails and delay units over synth pads with airy qualities to them. At other times it needed to feel like you were reaching through time and space from an apartment in London to the top of Uluru in reading a note from your son telling you about the girl that he loves or to be transported to the interior of a car driving down the open road with the boy you love leaving your old life of sorrow behind. Repetition became key in the structure of the music and sound of the play as a way to highlight the things that are repeated through the generations of the family. All of this needed to be incorporated into the various soundscapes of rain, wind, waves, and car engines that were constant throughout the play helping to inform location and time.
