God's Ear

by Jenny Schwartz

-Written by Jenny Schwartz, God’s Ear follows two parents and their child as they try to keep their life together after the death of their son. With visits from a G.I. Joe and the Tooth Fairy and a brief visit to a bar in the underworld, the family works through the five stages of grief.

-For this play, we were interested in capturing a childlike feeling with the sound allowing it to transform into the emotional reflection of Joe and Mel’s dead son and Lanie’s brother. Short bell sounds were used at internal transitions to demarcate of the nonexistent scenes. In this way, we were able to create more of an internal structure to the play. The sounds, generally, are evocative of winter, Christmas, and childhood. When we travel to the underworld briefly, it sounds as if the world is being plunged into water which is reflective of the death of their son.

Erica’s piano compositions were originally going to be incorporated into the staging with her playing live as Lanie observing the scenes and reflecting; however, we found greater success and dramatic clarity by recording them and playing back. Erica, Zohar I worked together to decide where in the play they should be used.
